À propos Balaam and the Angel est un groupe de rock gothique formé à Cannock, dans le Staffordshire, en Angleterre, en 1983.
Les trois membres fondateurs du groupe sont des frères écossais : les frères Morris (James Morris, Mark Morris et Des Morris). Enfants à Motherwell, ils ont travaillé dans l'industrie du divertissement au sein d'un numéro de cabaret. Ils ont déménagé vers le sud de l'Angleterre, à Cannock dans le Staffordshire, où ils ont formé Balaam and the Angel.
En 1985, le groupe a élargi sa formation avec l'arrivée de la claviste « Wendy Harper ».
Au départ, le groupe a auto-produit une série d'EPs via leur propre label Chapter 22 et a assuré des premières parties de tournée pour The Cult. Cela a permis à Balaam and the Angel d'attirer l'attention de Virgin Records, qui les a signés et a sorti leur premier album « The Greatest Story Ever Told » en 1986. Ils ont tourné pour le promouvoir aux États-Unis avec KISS et leurs compagnons de label Iggy Pop.
Un deuxième guitariste, et le premier membre extérieur à la fratrie, a rejoint le groupe en 1988 : Ian McKean. Le groupe a commencé à s'éloigner des styles musicaux du rock gothique pour adopter un son se rapprochant davantage du hard rock. Forts de ce nouveau style, ils ont enregistré l'album « Live Free or Die », qui comprenait le tube mineur de rock (n°13) et de radio universitaire (n°18) « I Love the Things You Do to Me ». Celui-ci a rapidement été suivi dans un style similaire par l'enregistrement de « Days of Madness », avant qu'ils ne soient remerciés par Virgin Records. Leur chanson « I'll Show You Something Special » figure sur la bande originale du film « Un ticket pour deux » (Planes, Trains and Automobiles) de Steve Martin et John Candy.
À un moment donné, le groupe a été rejoint par Chris P Notes aux claviers.
