Biographie:
Since its foundation in 2001 by two Iranian born musicians, Kiya Tabassian on setar and Ziya Tabassian on percussions, the ensemble provides a forum for cross-fertilization of various musical cultures, both within the ensemble itself and with its guest artists. Constantinople endeavours to consolidate the ties among these cultures by fostering a unique mode of musical expression - a vocabulary that has grown out of extensive research into the history and aesthetics of the musical traditions into which it delves, combined with freshness and creativity.
Guest artists who are associated with the instrumentalists of the ensemble are involved as much into the process of creation of a program than into its interpretation on stage. Of those numerous artistic collaborations, we can state singers Françoise Atlan, SAvina Yannatou, Rosario La Tremendita and Ghada Shbeir, Greek ensemble En Chordais, afghanese rubab player Homayoun Sakhi and Corsican vocal ensemble Barbara Furtuna.
Constantinople has given numerous performances in Canada, in Mexico and in Europe. During last years, the ensemble has performed in France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Greece, Lebanon, Canada, Mexico and China among other countries. Many of these concerts have been broadcast on the CBC/Radio-Canada radio network.
Winners of the Discovery of the Year Award at Opus Gala in 2003, Constantinople was the musical ensemble in residence at Radio-Canada for it's 2004-2005 season.
