#1 Dads is an Australian project conceived by Tom Iansek, who is also the singer-guitarist for Big Scary. He formed the group, initially named Dads in late 2010, as a side project during downtime, playing music that is "more acoustic than electronic in construction" compared to his original band. According to a Sputnikmusic critic, Iansek "began a particularly fertile period of writing and recording. Holed up in his house, the prolific Melbourne songwriter laid down a full-length album."
#1 Dads released their debut album, Man of Leisure, on May 1, 2011. The Sputnikmusic critic felt that the band was "experimenting with a fuller, more layered approach, adding bass and piano nuances, vocal harmonies, mandolins, and glockenspiels to his intricate guitar work, making for a rich, diverse, and rewarding listen." Oscar Coleman of FasterLouder described it as "much more complex and complete thanks to the use of varied instruments and layering, leaving this project to pique the interest of fans of his main band and lovers of acoustic ambiance." It yielded the single "Life, Oh Life" (July 2012), which Coleman considered the "strongest and most memorable track on the album... due to its creative brilliance, beginning with the soothing sound of raindrops and building to an acoustic climax, with the subtle flute melody complementing the strumming guitar and relaxed piano."
