Cigarettes After Sex is an American dream pop band formed in El Paso, Texas, in 2008 by Greg Gonzalez. The band is known for its ethereal and often dream-like musical style, lyrics focused on love and romance, and Gonzalez's androgynous voice. While frequently categorized as ambient pop, the band is also associated with shoegaze, slowcore, and indie rock.
The band's debut extended play, "I.," was released in 2012, with the song "Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby" gaining popularity through commercial licensing. After the standalone single "Affection" in 2015, Cigarettes After Sex released their self-titled debut studio album in 2017, followed by their second album, "Cry," in 2019. Their third album, "X's," was released in July 2024.
Cigarettes After Sex was formed by Gonzalez, who recorded the EP "I." in a stairwell at the University of Texas at El Paso. The band’s name, inspired by a personal experience, has been noted for its memorability. Gonzalez later relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where the single "Affection" and a cover of REO Speedwagon's "Keep On Loving You" were recorded and released in 2015. The band gained international recognition through YouTube recommendations, leading to live performances across Europe, Asia, and the United States.
From their debut album, the single "Apocalypse," written and produced by Gonzalez, became a sleeper hit and, following its use in TikTok trends, accumulated over 2 billion streams on Spotify as of August 2025. In 2019, the band announced their second studio album, "Cry," with the lead single "Heavenly," released on October 25, 2019.
Subsequent releases include the singles "You're All I Want" (2020), "Pistol" (2022), and the pair "Bubblegum" and "Stop Waiting" (2023).
