El Gato Negro, whose real name is Axel Matrod, is a French singer and multi-instrumentalist. Inspired by West African and Latin American music, his debut album was released in 2012. El Gato Negro's "subtropical pop" is the result of his travels. It features rhythms of cumbia, salsa, soukouss, bolero, or Afro trap blended with contemporary electronic music, with lyrics in French, Wolof, or Spanish. For his first albums, he was accompanied by singer, guitarist, clarinetist, and composer Irina González, percussionist Pablo Congas, double bassist Yo BigBass, trumpeter Blue Benson, and trombonist Paco Jones.
