Fleshcrawl is a German death metal band formed in Illertissen, Bavaria, in 1987. The band was founded by Stefan Hanus and Bastian Herzog under the name Morgöth. Since its formation, Fleshcrawl has undergone several line-up changes and has released a number of studio albums. Their most recent album, "Into the Catacombs of Flesh", was released in 2019 through Apostasy Records.
The band was originally formed as Morgöth in 1987. In 1990, following the departure of original vocalist Wendelin Dopfer, Alex Pretzer joined as lead vocalist. The band subsequently changed its name to Suffocation and released the demo tape "Festering Flesh". After discovering that the American death metal band Suffocation had already released material under that name, the group adopted the name Fleshcrawl. In 1991, Fleshcrawl released the EP "Lost in a Grave" through Morbid Records and began performing live under the new name.
In 1992, Fleshcrawl signed with Black Mark Production and recorded its debut studio album, "Descend into the Absurd", at Montezuma Studios in Stockholm. Following the album's release, Mike Hanus replaced guitarist Gero Schmitt. In 1993, the band recorded its second album, "Impurity", at Unisound Studio under the direction of Dan Swanö.
During the mid-1990s, line-up changes continued. Markus Amann left the band in 1995, and Mike Hanus assumed bass duties in the studio. The third album, "Bloodsoul", was recorded in late 1995 and released in 1996. The following year, Fleshcrawl released its fourth album, "Bloodred Massacre", featuring Sven Gross as the new lead vocalist. Both albums were recorded at Abyss Studios and produced by Peter Tägtgren.
In 1998, Tobias Schick joined as bassist, allowing Mike Hanus to return to guitar full-time.
