About

Herbert Arthur Wiglev Clamor Grönemeyer (born 12 April 1956) is a German singer, musician, producer, composer, and actor, known for his popularity in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Grönemeyer was born in Göttingen and spent most of his childhood and youth in Bochum. He began piano lessons at the age of eight, which later contributed to his work as a pianist and composer at Schauspielhaus Bochum. In 1979, he appeared as Lorenzo in "The Merchant of Venice" at Schauspielhaus Köln and began acting in television productions. He also released an album with the jazz group Ocean Orchestra in 1978 and composed music for the film "Uns reicht das nicht". His first solo album, "Grönemeyer" (1979), and the follow-up "Zwo" (1981) did not chart. That year, he starred as Lieutenant Werner in Wolfgang Petersen's film "Das Boot" and later played composer Robert Schumann in "Spring Symphony", for which he also composed the film score. Early albums "Total egal" (1982) and "Gemischte Gefühle" (1983) were not commercially successful. Grönemeyer achieved major success in 1984 with "4630 Bochum", which included the singles "Männer" and "Flugzeuge im Bauch". He appeared in the TV movie "Väter und Söhne" in 1985 and participated in Germany's first major AIDS charity organized by Rosa von Praunheim. Subsequent albums "Sprünge" (1986) and "Ö" (1988) reflected political themes, and "Ö" was also released in English as "What's all this", achieving success in Canada. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he released the album "Luxus", addressing German reunification. In 1994, Grönemeyer performed an MTV Unplugged concert, the first for a non-English-speaking artist. He moved to London in 1998, released "Bleibt alles anders" ("Everything Remains Different"), and founded Grönland Records.
