The group KALASH consists of rapper Coup ? K and DJ-Producer Jack Mes.
Both have been inseparable friends since middle school, even though at the time their musical tastes didn't necessarily align: while Coup ? K endlessly listened to cassettes of Assassin, Ice Cube, and Public Enemy, Jack Mes remained skeptical and preferred to dive into The Doors, Jimmy Hendrix, or Noir Désir. It was when a friend played him the legendary American hip-hop scene of the '90s—The Tribe Called Quest, Lords of the Underground, The Pharcyde, Nice & Smooth to name a few—that Jack Mes developed a passion for hip-hop. He acquired one turntable, then a second, and the endless sessions of scratching, freestyling, and sound tinkering in his bedroom began.
Their very first appearance under the name "Kalash" took place on the mixtape
"Pourquoi tu prends le mic ?" initiated by the Mizérecord collective of which they are a part. Following this project, the label Assassin Productions offered Coup ? K the opportunity to participate in the "L’avant-garde" compilation. This record was released in 1998 and allowed the group to be discovered.
This was an opportunity for Coup ? K to meet Solo (former MC of the group Assassin and director of projects such as the soundtrack to La Haine), with whom he would collaborate several times. For nearly a year, they set a daily appointment to improvise in Solo's studio.
In 1999, Kalash released their first maxi single "Flots d’mots" on Brif Records. The 1,000 copies sold out very quickly.
In 2001, they released their second maxi single "Fuir / Une voix douce".
Independent and masters of their art, they waited for sufficient maturity to assert themselves.
Their first album was released in the Spring of 2003.
