About

The story of Kandid began in Manchester in 2001, around Nicolas Driot, a young singer-guitarist originally from Haute-Loire (Auvergne)… After obtaining a musicology degree in St Etienne, the desire for a change of air, reinforced by a clear lack of motivation for military service, pushed him to emigrate to Great Britain. The initially planned one-year stay across the Channel ultimately stretched to 4 years, the first 2 of which were spent in a contemporary music school (where his classmates included the current drummer of 'The Streets', the backing singer of 'New Order'…). In this rather favorable context, he participated in various musical projects, began writing his songs (which strangely turned more and more toward the French language), performed solo in pubs… Then came the desire to form his own band… By answering classified ads, he met bassist Ewan Greenlees, followed by Zermena Frith, a Lithuanian cellist. For a year and a half, they performed on the 'folk' circuit of northwest England, joined for a time by a violinist; they also gave a few concerts in France during the summer of 2002… After recording a CD single (produced by Mick Routledge / 'Spaceheads') and participating in 2 compilations on the Manchester-based label "RF Records", the exile began to take its toll… Nicolas brought Kandid back in his luggage in June 2003, with a brand new 4-track demo in his pocket.
