A musician who knows how to write a catchy melody, engaging lyrics, and can also interpret the resulting song with a personal touch, is an almost endangered species nowadays. All the greater is the event when someone like that appears on our scene.
All of the above-mentioned – and many other – virtues are combined in the talented singer-songwriter Tomáš Klus. Thanks to his parents, who were great music enthusiasts, he grew up in an environment of festivals and concerts. To this day, he counts Jaromír Nohavica and the band Mňága & Žďorp among his greatest favorites. In his work, he follows the Czech singer-songwriter tradition, which he enriches with a modern approach, youthful lightness, perspective, and wit.
Yet until recently, his name appeared primarily in connection with sports. In 2002, as a member of the winning team, he even brought home a gold medal from the European Youth Modern Pentathlon Championships.
Because of sports, he also traded his native Třinec for Prague at an early age, where, however, the art world soon began to lure him. "I was fifteen or sixteen and suddenly I was cut off from my whole life up to that point. I needed to get all that homesickness and trouble out of my system somehow. That was right when I started turning to the guitar more and more. I had composed songs at home before, but only then did the desire arise in me to present them publicly as well," Tomáš recounts today about his difficult beginnings in our capital.
His first opportunity to play live came in a friend's bar. "At first, I created a kind of live musical background for lunches and dinners," he recounts with a smile today, "it happened by me making up songs in Swahili on the spot and serving them 'soulfully' to the diners. And they gradually started reacting to it."
