About

Whitesnake were an English rock band formed in London in 1978. The group was originally assembled as the backing band for singer David Coverdale following his departure from Deep Purple. Although the band developed into an independent entity, Coverdale remained the only constant member throughout its history. After releasing the EP "Snakebite" in 1978, Whitesnake issued the studio albums "Trouble" (1978) and "Lovehunter" (1979), which featured songs that became concert staples, including "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" and "Walking in the Shadow of the Blues". The band established a following in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan, and their subsequent releases "Ready an' Willing" (1980), "Live... in the Heart of the City" (1980), "Come an' Get It" (1981), and "Saints & Sinners" (1982) all reached the top ten on the UK Albums Chart. By the mid-1980s, Coverdale sought to expand the band’s presence in North America, where they had previously achieved limited recognition. With the support of the American label Geffen Records, Whitesnake released "Slide It In" in 1984, which included the singles "Love Ain't No Stranger" and "Slow an' Easy" and received significant airplay on MTV. In 1987, the band released their self-titled album, issued as "1987" in the United Kingdom. It became their most commercially successful release, selling more than eight million copies in the United States and producing the hit singles "Here I Go Again", "Is This Love", and "Still of the Night". During this period, Whitesnake adopted a visual style associated with the Los Angeles glam metal scene. Following the release of "Slip of the Tongue" in 1989, Coverdale paused his musical activities.
