Super! presents
Chinese American Bear in an exceptional concert on September 21, 2026 at POPUP!
Sino-American duo Anne Tong and Bryce Barsten form Chinese American Bear, an indie pop project born during lockdown. Inspired by the Chinese greeting habit of asking "have you eaten yet?", they blend music and culinary references to create a warm and nostalgic atmosphere. Their style combines diverse influences like the Flaming Lips, the Beach Boys, or the Bee Gees, with simple lyrics evoking dumplings, noodles, or boba tea.
Initially a simple musical collaboration, the project evolved when Barsten discovered that Tong's voice brought a unique dimension to the tracks. Having arrived in the United States as a child, Tong long had a complex relationship with her language and origins. Today, singing in Chinese allows her to celebrate this identity and reach many listeners in the Asian diaspora.
Their music thus mixes personal memories, humor, and sweetness. Tracks like "Take Me To Beijing" evoke summers spent with family and stir deep emotion in some listeners. Following a self-produced debut album in 2022 and then Wah!!! in 2024, the duo is preparing Dim Sum & Then Some, expected in May 2026.
On stage, Chinese American Bear offers joyful and quirky concerts, complete with mascots and backing singers, akin to a whimsical pop show. Their goal remains simple: to share playful and sincere music, capable of making people smile and dream like a childhood memory.
