The story
More than 450 races take place every year: 120 of them count towards a team competition, the challenge, and an individual competition, the escalot. Course landaise is one of the four forms of bullfighting practiced in the world. It is distinguished from the other three by two particularities. Unlike the other three (corrida, Portuguese bullfighting, and course camarguaise), it is practiced almost exclusively with females (Landes cows) and not bulls. The other particularity it shares with course camarguaise is that there is no killing of the animal during the race. On the contrary, the race serves just as much to reveal all the qualities of the Landes bullfighter as those of the cow which, receiving the utmost care from its stockbreeder (ganadero), will have the opportunity to participate in about twenty races a year for at least 10 years.
