Originally, technocracy carried a promise: that of a society where science and knowledge would be placed at the service of the people. William Henry Smyth imagined it as a tool for collective progress, in the spirit of Francis Bacon, where reason was meant to guide humanity while respecting nature.

Yet this ideal seems to have been hijacked today. Modern technocracy is often associated with a system where expertise serves economic interests and the powerful rather than the general public. Behind the rhetoric of merit and equal opportunity persist deep inequalities, sustained by social mechanisms that have become almost invisible.

Control is no longer exerted solely through coercion, but also through comfort, consumption, and entertainment. As Huxley suggested in Brave New World, a society can preserve its order not by locking individuals away, but by making them dependent on their own satisfaction.

Technology is therefore not the problem in itself. Everything depends on those who steer it and the goal they pursue: to liberate humanity or to strengthen those in power.
