The story
Fatoumata Diawara is one of the most important representatives of modern African music. With her unique blend of electronic sounds, traditional melodies, and unmistakable voice, she takes a perceptive look at social issues and thrills audiences worldwide. She has collaborated with musical greats such as Bobby Womack, Herbie Hancock, and Roberto Fonseca, played at renowned festivals like Glastonbury, and been part of projects such as Africa Express, where she shared the stage with Sir Paul McCartney.
Her debut album Fatou (2011) brought her international acclaim. It received high praise from critics such as Pitchfork and The Guardian and paved the way for a successful career. Her second album Fenfo (2018) received two Grammy nominations and won numerous awards, including the title of "Best Female Artist" at the 2020 Africa Awards. In her songs, she combines her Mandinka roots with afrobeat, jazz, pop, electronica, and hip-hop.
In May 2024, Diawara released the album London Ko, created in collaboration with Damon Albarn of Gorillaz. The album's title combines the cities of London and Bamako, representing the fusion of Western and African culture. Diawara sees London Ko as a vision of an imaginary continent uniting Europe and Africa, thereby reinventing traditional African music.
