More than 450 races take place every year: 120 of them count towards a team competition, the challenge, and an individual competition, the escalot. The Landes race is one of the four bull-fighting traditions practiced in the world. It is distinguished from the other three by two particularities. Unlike the other three (corrida, Portuguese bullfight, and Camargue race), it is practiced almost exclusively with females (Landes cows) and not bulls. The other particularity it shares with the Camargue race is that there is no killing during the race. On the contrary, the race serves just as much to reveal all the qualities of the Landes bullfighter as of the cow, which, the object of all care from its ganadero, will have the opportunity to participate in about twenty races a year for at least 10 years.
