The story
Oakland-based musician Kathryn Mohr released her first EP, As If, in 2020, an analog synth-based collection of dark, ruminative songs that garnered the attention of DIY artists and The Flenser. She followed it with Holly in 2022, co-produced by Madeline Johnston of Midwife, a shimmering collection of guitar songs punctuated by desolate electronic interludes.
Mohr's debut album, Waiting Room, was written and recorded in isolation during a month-long stay in Iceland and released in January 2025. The record earned Pitchfork's coveted Best New Music designation, establishing Mohr as one of experimental music's most compelling new voices.
Her sophomore album, Carve, is out now via The Flenser. Written over five years and recorded over several weeks in a single-wide mobile home in the Mojave Desert, the album centers on love experienced as a form of grief—not as the aftermath of loss, but as a condition of intimacy itself. Exploring memory, landscape, and emotional endurance, Carve expands Mohr's stark, intimate songwriting with heavier textures and moments of striking intensity, marking a bold evolution of her singular sound while remaining rooted in the vulnerability and emotional precision that have defined her work from the beginning.
