Lol Tolhurst, original drummer and founding member of the cult British band The Cure, pays tribute to them accompanied by his son Gray Tolhurst!
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 🔹 LOL TOLHURST (EX-THE CURE) ft. GRAY (cold wave, electro, post-punk, indie rock / GB)
Lol Tolhurst is best known as a founding member of The Cure, one of the most influential, popular, and critically acclaimed bands of all time. An inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, this musician has also distinguished himself in various musical projects and ventured into writing with the 2016 publication of his memoir titled “Cured - The Tale Of Two Imaginary Boys”.
Tolhurst first met his childhood friend Robert Smith at the age of 5, when they attended the same school in the London suburb of West Sussex. They went on to found The Cure in 1976, with Tolhurst on drums, and toured extensively worldwide to promote their groundbreaking albums “Three Imaginary Boys”, “Seventeen Seconds”, “Faith”, and “Pornography”. Lol later switched to keyboards before leaving the group in 1989, departing The Cure after recording their masterpiece, “Disintegration”.
This boundlessly creative artist has since settled in Southern California, where he composed, recorded, and toured with his band, Levinhurst. Tolhurst also participated in a memorable reunion tour with The Cure in 2011, performing together for the first time in over twenty years. Tolhurst then wrote his first published book, “Cured - The Tale Of Two Imaginary Boys”, released by Hachette Books in 2016. Hailed worldwide, this memoir traced his life and art up to that point and led to over 300 appearances in cities across North America, South America, the UK, and France. Just like his tours with The Cure, the book promotion tour gave Lol the opportunity to reconnect with his loyal fans.
Lol's creative adventures also continued recently following an unexpected encounter with his old friend Budgie, former member of Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Creatures. In 2022, the two teamed up to create the podcast series “Curious Creatures”, exploring the enduring legacy and contemporary relevance of post-punk while welcoming figures from all walks of life for revealing and casual conversations. Tolhurst recorded new tracks, this time with Budgie and producer Jacknife Lee (U2, Taylor Swift). The debut album by Lol Tolhurst, Budgie, and Jacknife Lee, titled “Los Angeles”, features punchy tracks exploring themes of freedom and slavery, beauty and decadence, as well as hope and despair. The album also boasts an impressive roster of guest vocalists and musicians, including The Edge (U2), James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse), Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream), avant-garde civil rights artist Lonnie Holley, Mary Lattimore, Starcrawler rebel Arrow de Wilde, Mark Bowen (IDLES), and many others. The album was released and followed by a US tour in late 2023 to critical acclaim.
Finally, Tolhurst published his second book, “GOTH: A History”, also in the fall of 2023 via Hachette Books. This new work gathers stories and anecdotes drawn from Tolhurst's personal memories as well as those of the musicians, magicians, and artists who made goth an essential and enduring movement.
