On July 21, 2016, a user on 4chan's /mu/ board posted a photo of a mysterious CD they had found in a record store in Nottingham, UK: a worn demo titled D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L, supposedly released in 2000 by four musicians: Owain, Andy, Shaun, and John. The listener uploaded the recordings—which appeared to have been damaged by disc rot—to file-sharing sites and then to YouTube, where they began circulating in internet music circles. The sensational appeal of the record was multifaceted. Was it a genuine 90s curiosity? A prank pulled by internet-savvy teenagers? An internet nostalgia experiment in the vein of vapourwave? No one knew. So the Panchiko hive mind mobilized, gathering on subreddits and Discord servers, examining every square inch of the packaging for potential clues, and even calling the Nottingham record store where D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L had supposedly originally originated.

"I woke up one day," Owain recounts, "and received a message on one of my old Facebook pages: 'Hello, you will probably never read this, but are you the lead singer of Panchiko?'" This question surprised Owain: to his and Andy's knowledge, D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L had never been uploaded to the internet.

The Panchiko fandom finally made contact the next day when they received Owain's reply, a simple "Yeah." The world finally had confirmation that not only were the members of Panchiko not 14-year-old kids, but they were very real, right down to the disc rot.

Panchiko is about to embark on their fourth sold-out tour of venues in the United States, and has already accumulated hundreds of millions of streams.
