The story
After a lifetime of hard work, Robert Finley has established himself as one of the leading voices of contemporary blues. Born and raised in the small town of Bernice, Louisiana, Finley spent decades busking and leading the gospel group Brother Finley and the Gospel Sisters before finally making his recording debut at the anything-but-early age of 62 with the 2016 album Age Don’t Mean A Thing.
This album caught the attention of Dan Auerbach, founder of the Easy Eye Sound label, sparking a long-term collaboration that includes Goin’ Platinum (2017), the autobiographical album Sharecropper’s Son (2021), and the critically acclaimed Black Bayou (2023).
The latter, an 11-track tour de force fusing Southern soul, jazz, folk, blues, rock’n’roll and more into a raw and resonant tribute to Finley’s home state of Louisiana, was met with widespread praise from major international media outlets—SPIN, The FADER, No Depression, American Songwriter, Paste, Uncut, and many others—with MOJO even declaring in a five-star review: "Black Bayou is surely the album Finley was destined to make, filled with stories only he could tell."
An electrifying performer known for his soulful charisma and powerful raspy voice, Finley has since established himself as an immensely popular international live act, with sold-out headlining tours, countless festivals, shows alongside The Black Keys, and a central role in Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound Revue.
He has also made several notable television appearances, including on the 2019 season of NBC’s America’s Got Talent—where he reached the semi-finals—as well as on CBS Saturday Morning.
Having overcome major hardships—including losing his eyesight in his sixties—Robert Finley is now recognized worldwide as a unique storyteller and one of the last great bluesmen of the modern era, a true living legend with plenty of sparks left to offer.
