The story
Vtoroi Ka is a multi-influenced duo originally from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Formed in 2017 by long-time friends, they released their full-length debut album Duet in 2020 and achieved success with their first viral track, the youth-oriented hip-hop Dependence Day (2020), followed by Serial (2022). But it was with the Baxter Dury-esque single released after their post-punk pivot that their popularity truly exploded. Their latest and third career album, Piggy Ride (2024), followed this upward trajectory. With over 200,000 monthly listeners on Spotify in less than a year, their audience is primarily located in Central Asia, Russia, and countries with large Russian-speaking communities, but they are increasingly drawing international attention thanks to their captivating sound. The key to their cross-border appeal lies in their ability to combine musical talent with an innate sense of theatricality in their performances. Their humorous music videos and quirky social media promotions are just as remarkable as their music. Vtoroi Ka's commitment to Kyrgyzstan, where they grew up, also plays an essential role. Unlike many artists who try to fit into the global music industry by moving to major metropolitan areas, they shoot their music videos in mountainous Bishkek and manage to stay authentic while making audiences want to discover this vibrant yet often overlooked corner of the world.
Their other major asset is their approach to every step of their musical journey. They seemed destined to create a successful post-punk record, but they defy categorization with their latest release. With the PO Gube EP, Sultan and Ilya have crafted an ambitious, voice-centric work featuring complex rhythms and irresistible emotion. At the heart of each song—and particularly the single Po Gube—is a true ear for pop and its ability to convey emotion. Add Sultan's vocals to the mix, and the result is especially compelling. Vtoroi Ka delivers a soundtrack for the dark, intoxicating ecstasy they evoke. Their musical manifesto could be summarized as: "Po Gube expresses the spirit of the city at night. Its temptations, its dark side. It's a sonic dystopia... there is no hidden meaning, only sound, money, instincts, and decadence."
In 2025, Vtoroi Ka will play their first concerts in neighboring countries as well as in Western Europe, notably at iconic venues such as Lido (Berlin), ARCHA+ (Prague), Petit Bain (Paris), Le Botanique (Brussels), Commissary (Heidelberg), and the Iceland Airwaves festival.
In 2026, Vtoroi Ka will continue their European tour, showcasing their new album at the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg as well as several other cities across the continent.
With the momentum they are currently building, it will likely not be long before Vtoroi Ka becomes one of the must-know names of the next generation of post-punk bands.
