Where and when
Portrait
Formed in Oldenzaal, Netherlands, in 1996, Soulburn emerged from the first breakup of Dutch death metal titans Asphyx when founding members Eric Daniels (guitar) and Bob Bagchus (drums) sought a dark, blasphemous outlet inspired by Bathory, Venom, and Celtic Frost. Partnering with bassist/vocalist Wannes Gubbels (Pentacle), the trio unleashed their cult blackened death/doom debut, Feeding on Angels (1998), before temporarily folding back into Asphyx. Re-formed in 2013 with vocalist/bassist Twan van Geel (Legion of the Damned) and guitarist Remco Kreft joining Daniels, the project evolved into an unholy blend of crushing doom heaviness, icy black metal tremolos, and relentless old-school death metal. Deeply rooted in occultism, pagan anti-theism, and cosmic dread, Soulburn cemented their underground legacy through sinister opuses. .
