It has been an intense yet highly rewarding few years for Shortall and his project corto.alto (a stage name that pays homage to his Irish and Spanish origins, translatable as “short.tall” in Spanish - but also in Italian).

The release of his debut album Bad With Names earned him a 2024 Mercury Music Prize nomination – alongside Scottish compatriot and current labelmate Barry Can’t Swim as well as artists like Charli xcx, Ghetts, Beth Gibbons (Portishead), Nia Archives, CMAT, and many others – in addition to hundreds of concerts worldwide, including major international festivals and a completely sold-out UK tour culminating in his self-curated, 2,000-capacity mini-festival “Made In Glasgow” at Glasgow's legendary Barrowlands Ballroom.

The music he creates as corto.alto defies categorization. It is deeply rooted both in his academic studies at the prestigious Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and in the experience gained within Glasgow’s vibrant and fertile music scene, incorporating an eclectic mix of influences ranging from club culture and multiple forms of electronic music to his love for classic Hip-Hop, Soul, and Funk.

His 2024 album “30/108” saw him freely blending genres, rhythms, and instrumentation across 30 tracks – released one per day for a month, selected from an archive of 108 demos and accompanied by live performance videos – highlighting his talent for instinctive creativity, innovation, and improvisation over a more rigid studio approach.

The exploration of the fertile ground between live instrumentation, electronic production, and sound design is also one of the key elements of corto.alto’s incendiary live shows, in which Shortall – in addition to playing bass, synths, trombone, and effects – takes on the role of band leader alongside a crew of immensely talented musicians, close friends, and regular collaborators.

It is precisely this fresh vision and the desire to subvert expectations that set Shortall apart, winning over a new generation of music fans not tied to a single scene, alongside the support of key radio and media figures such as Gilles Peterson, Sian Eleri, Jamz Supernova, Deb Grant, KCRW, and many others.
