Happy Mondays in an exceptional concert on January 29, 2027 at Cabaret Sauvage Happy Mondays were formed in 1980 in Salford, Greater Manchester. The original lineup featured Shaun Ryder on lead vocals, his brother Paul Ryder on bass, guitarist Mark Day, keyboardist Paul Davis, and drummer Gary Whelan. Mark "Bez" Berry later joined the band on stage for a live performance after becoming friends with Shaun Ryder; he served as a dancer and percussionist. Rowetta subsequently joined the band in 1990 to provide backing vocals. Their first official release was the EP Forty Five, issued on Factory Records in September 1985. Tony Wilson discovered them, and they signed with Factory Records. Their debut album, Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out), was released in 1987 and produced by John Cale. It was followed by two iconic albums: Bummed in 1988, produced by Martin Hannett. In the summer of 2015, the band played several British festivals as well as in Japan, Hong Kong, and China. In September, the Watch channel broadcast Singing in the Rainforest, a show following the band on a trip to Panama, where they composed and recorded a new song, Oo La La to Panama, with the isolated Embera tribe. In November, a UK tour coincided with the 25th anniversary of the album Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches. After successful UK tours in 2017, 2019, and 2024, Happy Mondays continued to perform at festivals in 2021, 2022, and 2023. In 2022, the band was shaken by the passing of Paul Ryder, founding member and emblematic figure of the Manchester music scene. Shaun’s brother was the key to the band's unique groove, his signature bass playing bringing a funky touch to their influential sound. Mikey Shine joined the band on bass in July 2022. In December 2024, Rowetta left the group. Firouzeh Berry joined Happy Mondays as a backing vocalist in January 2025.
